Cap Spartel

Where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean — Tangier's wild western edge.

Cap Spartel is the northwest tip of Africa. From the cliffs you see the Strait of Gibraltar and Spain; the 1864 lighthouse still works; and the beaches below are the cleanest near Tangier.

The lighthouse

Built in 1864 by Sultan Mohammed IV. Climbable on weekends and holidays (small fee), closed weekdays. The terrace at the base is open every day and has the best view.

Achakar beach

Right below the cape — long, sandy, Atlantic surf. Surf schools rent boards (€15/hour). Fish restaurants line the cliffside; Le Mirage hotel has the best terrace lunch.

How to get there

14 km west of Tangier. Petit taxi €15 each way (agree round-trip with waiting time). By car, the coastal road from Tangier is one of the most scenic drives in northern Morocco.

What to combine

The Caves of Hercules are 5 minutes south. Together they make a perfect half-day. Add lunch at Robinson Plage and you've filled the day.
