Places to see in Tangier — frequently asked questions

What are the must-see places in Tangier?

The Kasbah and its museum in Dar el Makhzen, the medina and Petit Socco, Café Hafa on the cliffs, the Grand Socco and Mendoubia gardens, the American Legation Museum, and Cap Spartel with the Caves of Hercules just outside the city.

Is Tangier worth visiting for a few days?

Yes. Two days cover the medina, kasbah and coast, and a third or fourth opens up Chefchaouen, Asilah or the Akchour waterfalls as a day trip.

How much does it cost to visit Tangier's attractions?

Most are cheap: the Kasbah Museum is 60 MAD, the Caves of Hercules 60 MAD, the American Legation is free or donation-based, and the kasbah walls, Grand Socco and Cap Spartel viewpoint cost nothing.

Can you walk around Tangier?

Yes — the medina, kasbah, Grand Socco and Ville Nouvelle are all walkable, though the medina is steep and cobbled. Anything past Cap Spartel or Malabata needs a taxi or a private car.

Do you need a guide to visit the Tangier medina?

Not strictly, but a licensed guide saves you the touts and explains what you are looking at. Our private half-day city tour includes the kasbah, medina and museum with an English, French or Spanish speaking guide.

What is the best time of day to see Tangier?

Late afternoon: the light on the kasbah walls and across the Strait of Gibraltar is at its best, and the medina is livelier once the heat drops.
