Day 1

Medina, Kasbah & the sunset cliffs

  1. 09:00

    Breakfast on the Grand Socco

    25–40 MAD

Msemen, olive oil and mint tea at a café on the square before the crowds arrive.

  2. 10:00

Walk the medina to the Petit Socco

    Free

Follow Rue es Siaghine down through the spice and slipper stalls. Ignore anyone offering to 'show you the way' — the lanes all run downhill to the port.

  3. 11:00

    American Legation Museum

    60 MAD

The only US National Historic Landmark abroad — Moorish courtyards, Matisse-era paintings and Tangier's spy history.

  4. 13:00

    Tagine lunch in the medina

    60–90 MAD

Family-run tables away from the port gate serve chicken with preserved lemon for a third of the tourist-strip price.

  5. 15:00

Kasbah Museum & the Sultan's gardens

    70 MAD

The old palace, the mosaic of Venus, and the terrace looking straight across the Strait to Spain.

  6. 17:30

    Mint tea at Café Hafa

    15 MAD a glass

Cliff-top terraces open since 1921. Go before sunset to get a front-row table.

  7. 20:00

    Dinner on Boulevard Pasteur

    120–200 MAD

Grilled fish, pastilla and the Terrasse des Paresseux view over the bay.

Local tip · Wear grippy shoes — the Kasbah lanes are polished stone and steep. Carry small notes; almost nowhere in the medina takes cards.

Day 2

Cap Spartel, Hercules Caves & the Atlantic beaches

  1. 09:30

Drive west along the Rmilat forest road

Private half-day from 900 MAD per vehicle

14 km of eucalyptus and villa-lined cliffs. A private vehicle is the sane way to link the coast in one morning.

  2. 10:15

    Cap Spartel lighthouse

Free · 30 MAD to enter the lighthouse

Where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean — the 1864 lighthouse and a viewing terrace over both seas.

  3. 11:15

    Caves of Hercules

    60 MAD

The sea-carved opening shaped like the map of Africa. Go before noon; coach groups land after lunch.

  4. 13:00

    Grilled sardines at Achakar beach

    80–120 MAD

Beach shacks serve the morning's catch with bread, salad and olives.

  5. 15:00

Camel ride or quad trail on the dunes

Quad from 1,049 MAD per bike

Short rides run along the sand road; quad trails head into the forest behind the beach.

  6. 18:00

Back to town for the corniche

    Free

The bay promenade fills with families at dusk — the best free people-watching in the city.

Local tip · The Atlantic side is 3–5°C cooler and much windier than the bay. Bring a layer even in July.

Day 3

On the water — boats, jet skis and the bay

  1. 09:00

Private boat cruise from the marina

2,025 MAD per boat (1–10 people)

One hour along the bay to Cap Malabata and back, with the medina rising behind you.

  2. 11:00

    Jet ski or paddle boarding

Jet ski from 1,049 MAD · 30 min

Flat morning water is the best window; the afternoon breeze picks up after 14:00.

  3. 13:30

    Lunch at the marina

    150–250 MAD

Seafood platters and juices with the yachts in front of you.

  4. 15:30

    Scuba discovery dive

    999 MAD · Pay Today 299 MAD

Three hours including full equipment and a guide in the water with you — no certification needed.

  5. 19:30

    Hammam and rest

    70 MAD local · 350+ MAD riad

Steam, black soap scrub and argan oil. The traditional medina hammams cost a fraction of the riad spas.

Local tip · Book water activities for the morning. Sea state on the Strait usually deteriorates through the afternoon.

Day 4

Day trip — Chefchaouen or the Akchour waterfalls

  1. 08:00

    Depart Tangier

Private return 2,099 MAD per vehicle (up to 7)

Two hours south through the Rif mountains, with a mint tea stop at the pass.

  2. 10:30

    Chefchaouen blue medina

    Kasbah 60 MAD

Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the Kasbah, and the blue lanes above Rue Targui — quietest before 11:00 and after 16:00.

  3. 13:00

    Rooftop lunch

    80–150 MAD

Goat cheese, bissara and tagines looking over the terracotta roofs against the mountain.

  4. 15:00

    Spanish Mosque viewpoint

    Free

A 25-minute uphill walk for the classic photo of the whole blue city.

  5. 17:00

    Return to Tangier

    Included in the private transfer

Back in the city for around 19:30–20:00.

Local tip · Prefer nature? Swap Chefchaouen for the Akchour waterfalls — a full day of river pools and the God's Bridge arch, 2,300 MAD per vehicle with 09:00 pick-up.

Tangier itinerary FAQs

How many days do you need in Tangier?

Two days covers the medina, Kasbah, Cap Spartel and the Caves of Hercules. Three days adds a boat or beach day, and four lets you fit a Chefchaouen or Akchour day trip without rushing.

What is the best 1 day Tangier itinerary?

Grand Socco breakfast, medina walk to the Petit Socco, American Legation Museum, tagine lunch, Kasbah Museum, mint tea at Café Hafa at sunset, dinner on Boulevard Pasteur. Everything is walkable except the return from Hafa, which is a 20 MAD petit taxi.

How much does a trip to Tangier cost per day?

Roughly 400–600 MAD a day backpacking, 900–1,500 MAD for a comfortable trip with restaurant meals and one activity, and 2,500 MAD or more with a private driver, boutique riad and boat trips.

Is Tangier walkable?

Yes. The medina, Kasbah, Grand Socco and Boulevard Pasteur are all within a 25-minute walk of each other. Cap Spartel, the Caves of Hercules and the beaches are 14 km west and need a taxi or private vehicle.

What is the best time of year for a Tangier itinerary?

April to June and September to October: 22–28°C, dry, and far less crowded than August. Winter is mild at 14–18°C but wetter, and the boat trips are weather-dependent.
