Eating in Tangier — frequently asked questions

What food is Tangier known for?

Grilled sardines and fresh Atlantic fish, tagines, harira soup, bissara bean soup for breakfast, calentita chickpea flan left over from the Spanish years, and mint tea served everywhere from Café Hafa to the Petit Socco.

How much does a meal cost in Tangier?

A bowl of bissara or a sandwich runs 15–30 MAD, a full tagine in a family restaurant 50–90 MAD, and a two-course dinner with fish in the Ville Nouvelle or a riad 200–400 MAD per person.

Where do locals eat in Tangier?

Away from the port-side terraces: the grill houses around the fish market, the small kitchens off Rue de Belgique, and the cafés of the Grand Socco. The listings on this page mark which spots are local favourites.

What time do restaurants open in Tangier?

Lunch runs roughly 12–3 pm and dinner starts late — kitchens fill after 9 pm in summer. Cafés open from about 7 am for breakfast.

Do restaurants in Tangier take card payments?

Larger restaurants and hotels do, but cafés, grill houses and medina kitchens are usually cash only, and card machines drop offline often. Carry dirhams.

Is it safe to eat street food in Tangier?

Generally yes if you pick busy stalls with high turnover, especially around the fish market and the Grand Socco. Stick to food cooked in front of you and bottled water.
