The Tangier medina is small (about 1 km²) and walkable in a morning. Here's a route that takes in the highlights and ends with mint tea on a clifftop.
Start: Grand Socco (Place du 9 Avril)
The lively square that links the modern town to the old. Coffee at Cinema Rif (the art-deco arthouse cinema) before you start.
Through Bab Fahs into the medina
The horseshoe arch. Once you're through, you're in the old town — narrow lanes, blue and white walls, no cars.
Petit Socco
The medina's main square — surrounded by old cafés (Café Tingis, Café Central) where Burroughs and Kerouac wrote. Sit, order a tea, watch the world go by.
American Legation Museum
The only US National Historic Landmark abroad. Free entry. Beautiful patio, Paul Bowles room, and an excellent collection of paintings of Tangier.
Up to the Kasbah
Climb the steep lanes to the Kasbah Museum (housed in the former Sultan's palace). Inside: zellige tiles, a tiny garden, and a panoramic terrace.
End: Café Hafa
Walk west along the cliff path to Café Hafa — terraced gardens above the sea, mint tea since 1921. Sunset is magic but it gets crowded; late afternoon is the sweet spot.
