Caves of Hercules

Mythological sea cave with Africa-shaped opening

About

Legend says Hercules slept here before his eleventh labour. The seaward opening is uncannily shaped like the map of Africa — the most photographed window in Morocco.

History

The caves were inhabited in prehistory and later quarried by Phoenicians and Berbers for millstones — the geometric notches in the walls are man-made. The 'Africa' opening was widened by quarrying.
