Visiting a mosque in Tangier

  • Non-Muslims: by Moroccan tradition, mosques are reserved for worshippers. You can admire the architecture, courtyards and minarets from outside.
  • Dress: shoulders and knees covered for everyone; women are encouraged to bring a light scarf when nearby.
  • Friday (Jumu'ah): the Dhuhr prayer is the busiest of the week — streets around the Grand Mosque and Mohammed V Mosque fill from around 12:30 PM.
  • Ramadan: Maghrib marks iftar — the city falls quiet for ~30 minutes before bursting back to life. Tarawih prayers run for over an hour after Isha.
  • Photography: photos of exteriors are fine; never photograph inside or during prayer.
